At some point, this page will probably be broken down into sub-sections with images and links to photos in my portfolio. For now, it’s all one page.
If you are interested in what type of camera equipment I have, then check lower on the page. It’s pretty decent without being “professional” level.
Note: I will be putting up a portfolio at some point, but the site was recently started and I wanted to get other things posted first.
Focusing on the Subject
The topic of “Photography” covers such a wide spectrum of subjects that you really need to focus and develop your style. *
The areas that I am most interested in are:
Portrait / Casual Photography
This is a somewhat large category, so I want to narrow it down a little. I like to take pictures of people in casual settings that they can then use for their own purposes. Hosting a party? Perfect. Hanging out with friends. I can do that too. If you want a “formal” picture for online profiles (and the selfie just isn’t cutting it), put those on the list.
If you are getting family together and want to make sure that you have some multi-generational pictures taken that will turn out well, we can set that up. I don’t have a studio, but the more casual pictures shouldn’t need one.
Macro Photography
Macro Photography is the practice of taking pictures of VERY small things (or being really close to things). If you have seen the pictures of a fly’s eyes, that’s macro photography.
I find this sort of photography interesting because the things at that level are so often missed. We may see a tree or even the leaf on the tree, but what about the moss that’s growing on the bark? Or the cicadas adult coming out of the shell? These are the things that macro photography will capture.
HDRI Photography
HDRI (High Dynamic-Range Imaging) Photography is the practice of taking multiple pictures of the same thing with varying exposures and settings, and then combining them to make something seem surreal. At least that’s how most people think of it.
For me, I’m more interested in taking those image “stacks” and making them into a file that can then be used as an environment for 3D modeling applications. With those environment files, a 3D scene can be rendered much more realistically than using less complete images for the environment.
Boudoir Photography
Boudoir Photography are very intimate, romantic, and also sensual photography. Generally, these pictures are requested by the subject and provided as a gift to their spouse. However, there are people who want to push against their own comfort levels when it comes to their body, and this style allows for that.
Some people consider this sort of photography to be too sexual. While it can be, there is a line between boudoir photos and erotic photography (let alone pornography). I would only cross that line upon written request by the person being photographed.
Mixing them together?
Yeah, I think that mixing certain ones together would be really cool if someone wanted to do it. I’ve some some work with different styles done and I liked how it looked. But it takes the right situation to make that happen.
Equipment
As mentioned above, some people are more curious about the photo equipment you use than what you take pictures of. These may be other photographers, but it can also be someone wondering how serious you are as a photographer (even a hobbyist photographer). Thus, here’s a breakdown of the main items I have.
- Canon EOS 7D (initial version)
- 50mm f/1.4 lens for portrait style shots
- 10mm f/2.8 lens for HDRI
- 28-135mm macro lens for more general purpose and macro photography
- remote flashes for synchronized flash photography
- ambient lighting for smaller shots
- a set of 4 magnifying lenses to attach to my macro lens
- miscellaneous other parts and pieces
I’m considering purchasing a Canon 7D Mark III when it comes out. But what I have now does a really decent job.
(*) Sorry / not sorry. It just started flowing and I left it.
